I will repeat myself once more…

Why? Because it bears repeating…

IT IS NOT A SPRINT! (see, I really am repeating myself)

Going 7/8 or 8/8 in the first night or week is not an invitation to do Heroic modes. You probably have not garnered enough of the newest gear to be ready to conquer the hard modes; additionally you may not have had enough experience with the newest raid mechanics to have committed to muscle memory and be ready for additional obstacles you will face in that hard mode.

No no…I am not saying you can’t attempt it. Go for it. But there are 2 inherent issues that you may face in your sprint to the finish line of Cataclysmic content…

  1. If you AREN’T ready, you will find yourself banging your head against the wall. Head banging leads to burnout. Don’t be surprised if that burnout happens more readily as well. Folks may not be as inclined to killing themselves during the holiday season, nor for the final tier of content given that the next XPac is probably a considerable ways away still.
  2. If said XPac is in fact still quite some time off, you may find yourself all too quickly “bored”.

Again, I always find myself reminding folks…Blizzard is not creating the next Mount Everest like life challenge for you to overcome. They are selling a product! They want this to last and provide as much bang for the buck as they are able. I have also heard and felt the pangs of “Its too easy!!” Well, that makes sense, it allows for the greatest scope of accessibility for the user base. Don’t look at the game through your “player” eyes…put on a pair of “business” goggles. What they have done makes total sense in so many ways, whether we like it or not.

Now, the argument back I hear consistently is the following: “Well, if they continue like this, I will be unhappy, and I will quit playing. SEE…they need to do it the way I like or they will lose people.” The problem with this perspective is that first off, its been said every major content release, and players always come back. Secondly, and 10 million players they are still far and away the leader of the pack. They have the clout and data to take the chance that YOU will be p.o.’d about the Raid Finder being too easy (or whatever your flavor of complaint is).

Its NOT perfect, don’t get me wrong. I am not trumpeting 4.3 as the greatest content ever, nor do I think Blizzard can do no wrong. I simply feel this new content has so far been fun. The dungeons are a welcome change from the Trollroics. I love the lore that has been laced in (I will admit I am a total sucker for the Lore based part of the game…I LURVS IT!).

My advice…pace yourself. Get folks geared up, spend a few weeks in the normals. Go back and get some of the older tier heroic modes done too. Take your time! There is no extra reward for being first. In fact, if you finish the content today or finish it 3 months from now…there’s really no difference beyond being able to say you did it first. If bragging rights are that important to you, go for it. Honestly, its in my nice to have list…not my must haves.

Downing 7/8 or 8/8 in a night or the first week is indeed an invitation to do heroic modes. Guilds who did so are obviously geared enough and work well enough as a team to get through that content. The gear in normal modes isn’t such a huge upgrade from heroic FL gear as to make a difference in a guilds ability to down the new heroics.

You sound a little too judgmental towards progression guilds. Play the game the way you enjoy and see fit and allow others to do the same but don’t try to act like being stuck in normal modes for a few weeks makes you superior somehow to guilds who downed a few more bosses than your guild in the exact or fewer same amount of raid hours. Don’t try to pretend that not clearing was the plan/goal for you guild.

Be proud of whatever your guild accomplishes and have fun raiding at whatever pace is comfortable and enjoy the ride but ffs allow others to do the same and stop acting like every guild needs to play the exact same way.

Also, congratulations on the 5/8. I know you guys have had it rough lately but you went in and kicked some ass. SO proud of you guys. Nice job!

Boo to Missarie for giving what is clearly a condescending comment guised as a neutral observation. My guess is that since you’re aware of the rough patch Q’s guild has been through and you’re “oh so proud of them”, you’re “nice job” is a dig at their lack of progression in your estimation and you’re slyly chuckling. For shame! Especially if you had anything to do with it.

I estimate that you’ve finished 8 for 8 and you’re ready for heroics. Excellent and well done! The point of this piece was to offer a cautionary tale for the eager, a reminder to savor the new content and enjoy playing the game. If you’re choice is to “hoark it down”, then by all means go for it. I don’t see any direct comment regarding progression guilds nor any in subtext. What I do see is commentary on people who are dissatisfied and bored once all new game content has been conquered within mere days after release and complain that blizzard is not attentive to their needs.

My comments were made because some guilds will always finish content faster, it’s the nature of the game.

Telling people to slow down and not down things isn’t a real suggestion. What exactly would you have guilds who downed 8/8 in the first week with little to no trouble at all do? “Okay guys I know we one shotted the first 7 bosses in a few hours but we’re just gonna stop and do nothing for the next two days.” Spending a few weeks on normal modes you can down in a single night is just silly. How would that solve boredom? Speaking from my experience this week with the new bosses I can say that outside of madness which took us 3 attempts the normal modes were no challenge. Short of maybe going in without a full raid, taking off heroic gear or just plain wiping on purpose, I’m just not sure how you would have people slow down and “savor” that.

There’s a reason heroic modes are in game and it’s to appease those types of guilds.

As for my affiliation with Q’s guild I can assure there is no chuckling going on here. I was VERY proud to wear that guild tag for the years I did and will always love, respect and wish nothing but the best for the guild and its members.

  4. Well, just cuz you finished 8/8 in week one definitely doesn’t mean everything was a one-shot. Our guild’s 10 man raid team happened to full clear the first week, but trust me, we _needed_ all three of our raid nights to do so. We have started working on heroic modes, and they are pretty damn tough. Our gm gets so down in the dumps or even negative over the matter that we aren’t catching up with other guilds, and I really have to hold myself back to remind him that it has only been 3 weeks, and most of the (few) guilds that have cleared 2 or 3+ heroics have a history of doing so quickly every tier.

I think this was a wonderful post, and you made it clear that you were expressing your opinion/offering advice. Welcome to the WoW blogosphere! Don’t let negative feedback get you down. 🙂
